Talking to kids about sex: A conversation on joy, consent and shame-free parenting

Kids learn about bodies and sex whether we talk to them or not. The question is whether they learn from us, their friends, pornography, or guesswork.

Many of us grew up with sexuality education focused mainly on reproduction, STIs, and preventing pregnancy, alongside a few awkward conversations with our parents. But what if these conversations could be different? What if we could approach sexuality with openness, curiosity, and warmth rather than shame, fear, and warnings?

As parents, it can be difficult to navigate conversations we never had ourselves. What is age-appropriate? How do we respond to unexpected questions? And how can we talk about bodies, pleasure, intimacy, and relationships while emphasizing boundaries and consent?

In this panel discussion, we'll explore how to create an environment where children feel comfortable asking questions, expressing curiosity, and developing a healthy understanding of sexuality.

Our conversation will focus on:

  • Openness over shame

  • Bodies, boundaries, consent, and pleasure

  • Healthy sexual development and age-appropriate conversations

  • No question too awkward

The conversation will be moderated by Cecilie Mueenuddin, masculinity scholar and parent, joined by sexologist Ingun Wik and community member and parent of a teenager, Gerd Johanne Skjennum Sørensen.

There will also be space for questions, reflections, and contributions from the audience.

Whether you're a parent, planning to become one, or simply interested in rethinking how we approach sexuality education, you're welcome to join the conversation.
