There are no actors. No dialogue. No narration. Yet more than forty years later, KOYAANISQATSI remains one of the most extraordinary cinematic experiences ever created.
Director Godfrey Reggio spent fourteen years in a Catholic religious order before ever picking up a camera. Living a life of silence, prayer and contemplation shaped his view of the modern world, and when he eventually turned to filmmaking, he wanted to create something that communicated entirely through image and music. Working alongside cinematographer Ron Fricke and composer Philip Glass, he spent years developing KOYAANISQATSI, a film so unconventional it struggled to find financial backing until Francis Ford Coppola came on board as executive presenter and helped bring it to cinemas.
Its title comes from the Hopi language and is commonly translated as "life out of balance." Through breathtaking slow motion, hypnotic time-lapse photography and astonishing aerial cinematography, the film contrasts the natural world with the relentless pace of modern civilisation. Cities pulse like living organisms, factories become choreographed machines, and everyday life begins to feel strangely alien.
It's impossible to separate KOYAANISQATSI from Philip Glass's hypnotic score, one of the most celebrated collaborations between music and cinema. Together, the soundtrack and imagery create something that's meditative, overwhelming and unlike almost anything else you'll ever experience on a cinema screen.
FOOD AND DRINK POLICY: FOMO Cinema Lounge Bar opens 1 hour before the first screening of the day and closes at 02:00, serving a wide selection of beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic refreshments, as well as fresh hot popcorn! Outside food is allowed in the bar but not in the cinema. No alcohol from outside allowed. All guests are invited to arrive early and stay late!
