Heritage Days 2026: Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU (Visit in English)

Visit the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU: A 19th‑Century Villa in Brussels’ Urban Landscape

You have probably walked past this elegant 19th-century villa, nestled in the Leopold Quarter, without suspecting that behind its façades lies the story of Brussels’ elite, along with remarkably well-preserved interiors that bear witness to a bygone era.

We invite you to step through doors that are usually closed to the public and discover this sumptuous mansion, which today houses the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the European Union. A true example of aristocratic residences of its time, the building captivates visitors with its grand staircase and richly decorated neo–Louis XVI wood-panelled reception rooms.

The twin buildings, which currently house the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU, are among the few original structures remaining on Rue Belliard/Belliardstraat. Dating back to around 1855, they form an integral part of the historic urban landscape of the Leopold Quarter, one of Brussels’ earliest planned urban districts. They also illustrate how diplomatic, residential and institutional functions have shaped the evolving urban landscape of the European Quarter.

Likely designed by Tilman‑François Suys, architect and town planner of the Leopold Quarter, the remarkable balance and proportion of the Renaissance-inspired elevations offer a unique glimpse into 19th-century noble life.

Visitors will also learn about the Lithuanian diplomatic service and gain access to spaces used for official diplomatic functions.

The team of the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the European Union also invites you to enjoy a unique and immersive experience. Through the use of contemporary technologies, visitors will be encouraged to step away, for a moment, from the urban setting of Brussels and be transported to the heart of Lithuanian landscapes, in harmony with the architecture and spirit of the place. Images, sounds, and flavours will come together to awaken the senses and offer a sensory escape, where heritage and modernity interact harmoniously, bringing the visit to life.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the European Union!
