Richard Linklater | 2025 | USA | 100 minutes
Presented in the original English audio with English subtitles.
BLUE MOON follows two former lovers who reconnect during one long night in a small American city. They talk, argue, joke, and wander through bars, quiet streets, and empty apartments. Nothing dramatic happens at first. What matters is the slow return of old feelings and the fear that history will repeat itself.
Linklater uses his familiar strengths. Natural conversation. Careful pacing. Fans of his "BEFORE" trilogy will know exactly what I mean when I say his characters speak honestly only after circling the truth for an hour. The film shifts between warmth and regret. Both characters try to present newer, stronger versions of themselves, but their old selves keep breaking through.
Moments of silence carry weight. Passing strangers and background details often reveal more than dialogue. BLUE MOON reflects on how people change, how they fail to change, and how memory can be both comfort and burden.
It pairs closely with NOUVELLE VAGUE for viewers interested in repetition, second chances, and parallel lives which is also directed by Linklater and screening Sunday this week.
