Filmoveka x Arc Space: Music Videos: A Film Director’s Guide

Saturday 14. March at 19:00 - 22:00

Arc London

This time, we’re turning to music videos as an important creative space for film directors — not simply as promotional work, but as a place to experiment with form, rhythm, performance and visual storytelling.

We’ll be watching a curated selection of music videos made by directors who later went on to build major film careers — including Michel Gondry, David Fincher and Spike Jonze, to name just a few. Using their early work, we’ll look at how, for many filmmakers, the music video became a way into the industry, a space to develop a personal visual language, and a place to take creative risks long before moving into longer-form cinema. We’ll also reflect on how this pathway shaped an entire generation of directors — and why some chose to move on to feature films, while others continue to work primarily within short-form and commissioned work. These are just some of the ideas we’ll be getting into on the night.

As with all filmoveka events, the focus is on cinema as a creative practice — how directors learn, experiment and grow across different formats, and how working between film and music video can shape a director’s voice in very different ways.
