WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE is presented as part of our extended Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.
Todd Solondz’s debut feature introduced one of the most painfully honest voices to emerge from the American independent film boom of the 1990s. The film follows Dawn Wiener, an awkward middle school student navigating the quiet humiliations of adolescence. Ignored by her parents, bullied at school, and overshadowed by her more successful younger sister, Dawn drifts through suburban New Jersey searching for some form of belonging.
Solondz approaches the material with a mixture of empathy and brutal honesty. The film refuses to soften the everyday cruelty of teenage life. Insults, misunderstandings and small betrayals accumulate until Dawn’s world feels unbearably isolating. At the same time, the film finds unexpected humor in the absurd rituals of adolescence and the fragile hopes that accompany them.
Produced independently on a modest budget and shot largely on location in suburban New Jersey, WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE became one of the defining films of the 1990s American indie movement. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it won the Grand Jury Prize, establishing Solondz as a distinctive new filmmaker willing to explore uncomfortable territory with clarity and precision.
Today the film remains a landmark of independent cinema, remembered for its unsentimental portrait of adolescence and for introducing a new tone of dark, socially observant comedy to American film.

If the Atoneli St entrance is locked you can get in via the side entrance on Sulkhanishvil St between 21:00 and 23:00. We close at 02:00 each evening.
