Our understanding of the world and the problems we observe is driven by our own personal mental models, whether we construct them deliberately or not. A mental model is our internal picture of how we believe a system works. It’s a set of assumptions and beliefs we use to make sense of the world and to decide how to act. Mental models help us humans think and survive in an overwhelmingly complex world, helping to filter out information and focus on what is most important to solve a problem.
Causal-loop-diagramming is a useful tool in systems thinking to make our mental models explicit and visualize cause-and-effect relationships. They can aid in communication and collective sense-making. As we share with each other, gain experience, and refine our mental models, we are better able to adapt to new situations and changes.
In this workshop, participants will get to construct their own causal-loop diagrams and learn a lifelong tool that can be applied to any problem they face in their personal or professional life.
