On December 12 at 19:00 in Vilnius, paleontologist and science popularizer Alexander Markov will give a lecture on the Five Great Extinctions ☠️

The history of life on Earth is not a smooth journey “from simple to complex.” Over millions of years, our planet has faced crises when the number of living species sharply declined. The largest of these are known as mass or great extinctions.

In the last half-billion years, there have been five such global catastrophes. In recent decades, science has made great progress in studying them — we are beginning to understand what really happened in those ancient times.

We’ll talk about:

  • Did all the extinctions share a common cause, or did each have its own set of factors;
  • Why did some species survive while others vanished forever;
  • How life on Earth changed after each catastrophe;
  • What ancient crises have in common with today’s climate change;
  • Should we be worried about the Sixth Extinction — which may already have begun;

Alexander Markov will discuss the five most devastating catastrophes in Earth’s history and how scientists are decoding their causes and consequences. Special attention will be given to the fifth extinction — the one that ended the age of dinosaurs and left behind many fascinating mysteries.

After the lecture:
