FOMO Cinema Presents: CANNES HEAT
Summer has finally arrived, so FOMO is bringing CANNES HEAT to the big screen: a week of scandalous, divisive, seductive films that shocked audiences, split critics and turned desire into cinema history.
LUX ÆTERNA
Gaspar Noé | 2019 | France | 51m | Presented in the original French audio with English subtitles
LUX ÆTERNA is Gaspar Noé at his most compressed and chaotic. Shot as a split-screen descent into a film production falling apart, it follows two actresses, played by Béatrice Dalle and Charlotte Gainsbourg, as a witch-trial shoot collapses into ego, panic, technical failure and flashing light.
Dalle, the former model and actress best known for the French cult classic BETTY BLUE, brings exactly the kind of volatile screen presence Noé knows how to weaponise. Gainsbourg meets her with a cooler, more exhausted intensity, and the film lets both performers drift through a production that seems to be losing control in real time.
When LUX ÆTERNA premiered out of competition at Cannes in 2019, the reaction was split. Some critics admired its split-screen construction and full-throttle attack on the senses. Others saw it as Noé repeating himself: provocation first, meaning second. The final strobing sequence became the obvious dividing line.
Noé treats cinema as a beautiful machine with very bad wiring. The set becomes a trap, the camera keeps multiplying perspectives, and the film’s short runtime only makes the experience feel more concentrated. It’s part backstage nightmare, part experimental provocation, and exactly the kind of opening shot a Cannes week deserves.
Due to the 51-minute runtime, tickets for this screening are priced at only 10 GEL.
