Ten hours of sound, from evening to sunrise.
On Saturday, 26 September, at 19:49, the moon turns full over Riga. At 21:30 we open the doors.
A regular sound bath lasts an hour: you've only just let go, and the lights are already coming on. Here you have the whole night, and there's no need to try to stay awake. Falling asleep is the point. What happens to sound the moment you stop consciously listening to it is what this whole night is an experiment in.
What you'll hear
Gongs, quartz and metal singing bowls. RAV Vast. Drone synthesizers holding the lowest layer through the night.
And a plant. A sensor attached to one of its leaves reads its biodata and turns it into sound.
The first hour is voice
The night opens with an hour-long voice meditation: a mystical bedtime story of the kind nobody tells adults anymore. Somewhere in the middle of it, you set your intention for the night. Then the story ends, and the gongs come in.
How the night unfolds
21:30 — Doors. Tea. Settling in.
22:00 — Voice meditation and intention.
23:00 — First wave. Gongs at full voice, bowls.
00:30 — Second wave, quieter. Drones, synthesizers, the sound of the plant.
02:00–06:00 — Sleep layer. The sound doesn't stop, but it doesn't rise either.
06:30 — Slow return. Single notes.
07:09 — Sunrise. Tea.
Morning
On a Sunday morning, Old Riga doesn't belong to anyone yet. Most likely you'll head home and fall asleep again. That second sleep is often the best part.
What to bring
Blanket or sleeping bag · pillow · warm socks · whatever you usually sleep in · water · toothbrush. Earplugs if you're a light sleeper: the sound is meant to be slept in, but it's there.
Mattresses and eye masks are provided. Bring your own blanket and pillow: you sleep better with something that smells like home.
