Before BARFLY, there was Charles Bukowski.
Widely regarded as one of America's most influential underground writers, Bukowski spent decades turning his own experiences of poverty, dead-end jobs, broken relationships, and chronic alcoholism into novels, poems, and short stories that earned him a devoted following around the world. BARFLY is his most personal work, written specifically for the screen and inspired directly by his own life.
Mickey Rourke gives one of the defining performances of his career as Henry Chinaski, Bukowski's fictional alter ego, a hard-drinking writer who spends his days drifting between cheap bars, street fights, rented rooms, and fleeting romances. Opposite him, Faye Dunaway is equally unforgettable as Wanda, another lonely alcoholic searching for meaning at the bottom of another bottle.
Directed by Barbet Schroeder, the film captures the faded beauty of Los Angeles dive bars with remarkable authenticity. Much of its atmosphere comes from real locations and Bukowski's own intimate knowledge of the people who inhabited them. Bukowski was closely involved throughout the production and even makes a brief cameo appearance as a bar patron, quietly observing Mickey Rourke portraying a version of himself. It's a fitting moment in a film that blurs the line between autobiography and fiction.
Rather than presenting addiction as tragedy or redemption, BARFLY simply observes its characters with honesty and compassion. Henry and Wanda are deeply flawed people, yet Bukowski refuses to mock or pity them. Their world is messy, funny, heartbreaking, and occasionally surprisingly tender.
