Vilnius is a city changing faster than we can get used to it.
We have already come to terms with the endless roadworks, the non-stop debates over street narrowing, new bike lanes, and the quest known as "finding a parking spot in the Old Town or Užupis." We accept this as the inevitable "Vilnius vibe."
But what if this Baltic metropolis could be more than just a contrasting mix of Baroque architecture and glass skyscrapers? What if it could be a truly cozy, human-scale space?
On September 13, urbanist Arkady Gershman invites everyone who wants to stop being a mere user of the city and become a professional citizen to a special meetup.
We won’t be talking about boring politics. Instead, we’ll explore how a city (Vilnius and other world capitals) subtly shapes our mood, productivity, and safety through the right sidewalks, squares, and intersections.
What we’ll talk about:
How "trendy" development can break the urban environment;
How to design roads so people want to live and stroll there, rather than just drive past by car;
What 21st-century cities have suddenly adopted from 18th-century European towns;
How bike lanes sometimes manage to get in the way of cyclists themselves.
Expect urban stories from all over the world and a chance to finally understand how a "city for people" actually works today. This is an evening for those who want to take a fresh look at the familiar streets of Naujamiestis, Žirmūnai, or Šnipiškės.
Come for a "new perspective," great insights, and good company!
About the speaker: Arkadiy Gershman is an urbanist and the creator of the "City for People" YouTube channel. He talks about how cities are structured: why some streets are comfortable and safe while others are not, and why we need trams, bike lanes, and quality public spaces. For over 15 years, he has been studying the urban environment, participating in the development of national standards, and consulting cities. His goal is to help people better understand their city and how to make it more convenient for living. Come for a "new perspective," great insights, and good company!
