L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE is presented as part of our extended Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.

Cédric Klapisch’s breakout international hit captures the strange, chaotic freedom of early adulthood through the experience of a group of European students sharing an apartment in Barcelona. The story follows Xavier, a young French economics student who arrives in the city as part of the Erasmus exchange program and finds himself living with students from across the continent. What begins as a practical arrangement quickly becomes a collision of languages, cultures, habits and personalities.

The apartment itself becomes the film’s central character. French, Spanish, Danish, Italian, British and Belgian students negotiate space, relationships and identity while attempting to figure out what adulthood might look like. Klapisch approaches the material with humor and warmth, allowing moments of awkwardness, friendship and cultural misunderstanding to unfold naturally.

Produced independently within the European film system and shot largely on location in Barcelona, L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE became a major success across the continent and helped define a generation of European youth cinema. The film resonated strongly with audiences who had experienced the Erasmus program themselves, capturing the sense of temporary communities formed far from home.

Its popularity led to two follow-up films, RUSSIAN DOLLS and CHINESE PUZZLE, which revisit the characters years later as they navigate adulthood.

Today THE SPANISH APARTMENT (aka L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE) stands as one of the most recognizable European independent films of the early 2000s, a portrait of youth shaped by travel, cultural exchange and the shifting idea of what it means to be European.
