THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is presented as part of the week-long Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.
Made for around 60,000 dollars and shot on handheld cameras with largely improvised dialogue, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT redefined what independent horror could be. The film follows three student filmmakers who travel into the Maryland woods to investigate a local legend. As their map disappears and tensions rise, the line between performance and reality begins to blur. What unfolds is stripped of traditional scares and spectacle. There is no orchestral score, no elaborate effects, just darkness, sound, and human panic.
Upon release, the film became a cultural phenomenon. Produced for roughly 60,000 dollars and earning around 248 million dollars worldwide, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT delivered one of the most extraordinary returns on investment in cinema history, returning more than 4,000 times its production budget. Its success paved the way for a wave of found footage horror, influencing films like PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, REC, THE LAST EXORCISM, CREEP and CLOVERFIELD, and reshaping low budget genre filmmaking in the 2000s.
You have probably already seen THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, but did you see it on the big screen in a dark cinema? If you are interested in how minimal resources can generate maximum cultural impact, and are a fan of inventive horror, this film remains one of the clearest examples in modern cinema history.
