TRIA TERRAE/ Kolme maa muusika/ Music from three lands

TRIA TERRAE - kolm maad - uurib, võrdleb ja miksib Lõuna-Itaalia, peamiselt Calabria, muusikat Eesti ja Rootsi muusikatraditsioonidega. Kolm muusikut (Sofia Joons, Piergiuseppe Maggi ja Giuseppe Longo) esitavad lugusid, mis ühendavad traditsioonilisi Calabria ja Põhjala helisid.

TRIA TERRAE – three lands – explores, compares and mixes music of Calabria in Southern Italy with music traditions evolved around the Baltic sea in Estonia and Sweden. The three musicians—Sofia Joons (Sweden/Estonia/Finland), Piergiuseppe Maggi (Italy), and Giuseppe Longo (Italy)—rearrange pieces that blend traditional Nordic and Calabrian sounds. The key instruments in their cultural fusion are the Calabrian lyre and the bowed lyre named talharpa. The energy takes shape in the rhythms of dance music combined with songs in Estonian, Swedish and Italian. 

TRIA TERRAE sheds light on how ancient instruments still can tell stories of communities, memories, belongings, and never ending transformations. TRIA TERRAE opens up a way to discover similarities and differences between distant traditions, yet united by the same need: to feel rooted in ones culture and open for meetings and musical dialogue over cultural borders.

TRIA TERRAE stems from a chance meeting at a folk music festival in Viljandi, Estonia, between Sofia Joons and the singer and percussionist Giuseppe Longo in 2025. From there, the idea of ​​establishing a musical twinning between the talharpa and the Calabrian lyre developed, and Piergiuseppe Maggi, one of the most authoritative interpreters of this traditional Southern Italian instrument, was invited to the trio.
