For those who have never visited Narva, the image of the city is largely shaped by two things: common stereotypes and prejudices, and the picture created by the media. But how is the city seen by those who report the news from Narva? What does Narva look like through a journalist’s lens—a lens that reveals the many layers of this border city?

It is not just a building, but a scene of political battles. Not just a street, but a long-delayed construction project. Not just a piece of graffiti, but the story of the city’s most successful tourism project. Not just a district of Khrushchev-era apartment blocks, but a graveyard of hopes for restoring Narva’s Old Town.

During this author-led tour by ERR journalist Mihhail Komashko, participants will try to find the city centre, discover the colourful layers of different eras along ordinary streets, see dynamic contemporary history reflected in the static urban landscape, and even attempt to grasp - and measure - the intricacies of local political life.

Mihhail Komashko is a Narva native and a television and radio presenter. He graduated from the Saint Petersburg University of Film and Television. After returning home, he became an editor at Radio 4’s Narva studio. In 2019, he joined the team of the ETV+ programme “Narodu vazhno” (“What Matters to the People”). Alongside his journalistic work, he gives lectures on media literacy, co-organises the BAZAR Discussion Day and hosts the film club at Narva Central Library.
