MEMENTO is presented as part of our extended Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.

Before Christopher Nolan became the go-to director for large-scale studio productions, he emerged from the independent film world with this inventive psychological thriller. MEMENTO follows Leonard Shelby, a man suffering from a rare form of short-term memory loss who is determined to track down the person responsible for his wife’s murder. Unable to retain new memories, Leonard relies on handwritten notes, photographs, and tattoos etched across his own body to guide his search for the truth.

What distinguishes the film is its radical narrative structure. Nolan tells the story in reverse chronological order, allowing the audience to experience the same confusion and uncertainty that defines Leonard’s condition. Each scene moves backward in time, revealing fragments of information that challenge the reliability of everything we think we understand.

Produced independently for around nine million dollars and initially released through the international festival circuit, MEMENTO became one of the most influential indie films of the early 2000s. Its success demonstrated that formally ambitious storytelling could thrive outside the traditional studio system. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and went on to receive Academy Award nominations for both its screenplay and editing. The screenplay is based on the short story "Memento Mori" by Christopher Nolan's brother Jonathan Nolan (see THE DARK KNIGHT and WESTWORLD).

More than two decades later, MEMENTO remains one of the clearest examples of how independent cinema can reshape the language of storytelling itself.
