On the 17th of August Paavli Kultuurivabrik will be visited by the Nigerian superstar vocalist and song writer known as Mr. Eazi, who will be performing with his new pan-African music group Choplife Soundsystem. The group also hosts UK-based afrobeats selector and tastemaker DJ Edu as its resident DJ, along with an informal crew of contributing deejays, producers and artists from across the continent.
Mr. Eazi will be the primary vocalist on Choplife Soundsystem recordings, whilst also serving as the MC — or Minister of Enjoyment — at live events. Choplife Soundsystem derives its name from the popular West African pidgin slang phrase chop life, meaning to “enjoy life”, along with the traditional soundsystems that are the backbone of Jamaican music culture. In Jamaican parlance, a soundsystem is a mobile crew of DJs and MCs who present music together at public events such as street parties, clubs and festivals.
Mr. Eazi is considered to be a pioneer of Banku music, a subgenre of afrobeats. A combination of Ghananian highlife bounce mixed with Nigerian chord progressions and influences ranging from R&B, hip-hop and reggae music. Mellow and laid back with percolating rhythms — this is Banku!
