YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN | Halloween Week: Cinema of the Damned

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974)

Mel Brooks | United States | 1h 46m | English audio and subtitles |

Mel Brooks's YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is one of the great American film comedies, a hilarious tribute to the monsters and mad scientists of classic Hollywood horror.

FOMO presents YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN as the opening film of THE TRANSYLVANIAN TAKEOVER, the Halloween night finale of our alternative Halloween Film Week.

At 20:30, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975) continues the evening with another outrageous take on the Frankenstein myth. Where YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN uses the old monster movies for comedy, ROCKY HORROR takes their mad scientists and artificial creations into the world of glam rock, sexual freedom and extravagant costumes.

After the screenings, FOMO's Halloween party continues with themed cocktails, a costume competition and a DJ playing glam rock, goth and disco.

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) is a respected scientist determined to distance himself from his notorious grandfather, even insisting on a different pronunciation of the family name. But when he inherits the ancestral castle in Transylvania, he encounters the hunchbacked Igor (Marty Feldman), his assistant Inga (Teri Garr) and the sinister housekeeper Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman). Soon, Frederick is following in his grandfather's footsteps, with increasingly outrageous consequences. Peter Boyle stars as the Monster, alongside Madeline Kahn as Frederick's fiancée Elizabeth.

The idea originated with Gene Wilder while working with Brooks on BLAZING SADDLES. Together they developed a screenplay inspired by the Frankenstein films of the 1930s. Brooks insisted on shooting in black and white to recreate the look of James Whale's FRANKENSTEIN (1931) and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935). When Columbia Pictures resisted, the production moved to 20th Century Fox.

Brooks also tracked down Kenneth Strickfaden, the electrical-effects specialist behind the original FRANKENSTEIN laboratory. Strickfaden still had much of the equipment in storage, and it was brought back into service for YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. The machines seen in the film are the same ones that helped bring Boris Karloff's monster to life four decades earlier.

Nearly fifty years after its release, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN remains one of Mel Brooks's finest achievements. Its brilliant ensemble cast, perfectly timed comedy and genuine affection for classic horror make it as entertaining today as it was in 1974, and an ideal film to kick off FOMO's Halloween night celebrations.
