TREES LOUNGE
Steve Buscemi, 1996, USA, 1h35m, English language with English subtitles
Before he became one of Hollywood's most recognisable character actors, Steve Buscemi quietly made one of the most honest independent films of the 1990s.
Written, directed by and starring Buscemi in his feature directorial debut, TREES LOUNGE is a deeply personal portrait of people whose lives haven't quite turned out the way they'd hoped. Buscemi plays Tommy, an unemployed mechanic drifting through a working-class Long Island neighbourhood after a painful breakup. His days are spent moving between the local bar, old friends, dead-end jobs and increasingly questionable decisions, always believing things might somehow improve tomorrow.
Buscemi has said he wanted to make a film about ordinary people without heroes or villains, and that's exactly what makes TREES LOUNGE so special. It's funny without chasing jokes, heartbreaking without becoming sentimental, and filled with the kind of quiet observations that feel drawn from real life rather than Hollywood.
The supporting cast includes Chloë Sevigny, Anthony LaPaglia, Seymour Cassel and a young Samuel L. Jackson, but this is unmistakably Buscemi's film. It's a compassionate, deeply human debut from a filmmaker who understands that the most compelling stories don't always belong to extraordinary people.
