Winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor, Nicolas Cage delivers the performance of his career as Ben Sanderson, a Hollywood screenwriter who, after losing everything, arrives in Las Vegas with a single intention: to drink himself to death. There he meets Sera, a sex worker played with extraordinary warmth and vulnerability by Elisabeth Shue in an Academy Award-nominated performance. Together they form an unlikely relationship built not on the hope of changing one another, but on mutual acceptance.

Unlike most films about addiction, LEAVING LAS VEGAS refuses easy redemption or sentimental clichés. Director Mike Figgis presents alcoholism with remarkable honesty, showing both its destructive consequences and the humanity of those caught within it. The result is heartbreaking, intimate, and deeply compassionate.

Much of the film's emotional power comes from its naturalistic style. Shot largely on location in Las Vegas with a small crew and available light, the city feels less like a glamorous playground than a place where people arrive hoping to disappear. Figgis' jazz-infused score and fluid handheld cinematography create a dreamlike atmosphere that perfectly reflects Ben's increasingly fractured state of mind.

Nicolas Cage's performance remains one of the most fearless ever committed to film. His portrayal avoids caricature, finding moments of humour, tenderness, anger, and despair without ever asking the audience for sympathy. It deservedly earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor and is still widely regarded as the finest performance of his career.
