Emel Mathlouthi rose to global recognition when she performed her anthem Kelmti Horra — My Word is Free — at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. That moment said everything about who she is: an artist whose music carries the weight of the world without losing its beauty.
Described by The Guardian as one of WOMAD's most powerful moments, compared by The Times to an Arabic cousin of Björk, praised by Pitchfork, Vogue, and the NY Times, Emel is one of the most singular voices in contemporary music. Tunisian by origin, now American, she moves between electronic, rock, hip-hop, and deep Arabic musical traditions — blending them into something that belongs to no single genre and no single place.
Her latest album MRA — which means "woman" in Arabic — is a feminist manifesto built entirely by women, featuring collaborations with Camélia Jordana, Acid Arab, and the composer behind Björk and Sigur Rós. It is danceable and hard-hitting, fragile and explosive, all at once.
Live, Emel is a force. From quiet, devastating moments to full-body energy, her shows do not let go.
Lisbon. One night only.
