How do you start a revolution at a British school, confuse tights with a tie, and win a battle with the British healthcare system?
Join us for Birch Tears, an evening of literary stand-up with writer and journalist Elena Timokhina, author of the Telegram channel Dostoevsky’s Daughter.
Funny, moving and occasionally hard to believe, these stories explore growing up, moving abroad and discovering that life keeps rewriting our plans. They take us from teenage adventures in a small Russian town and a first job at a newspaper to Britain, school WhatsApp groups and unexpected discoveries in a new country.
What to expect
Elena will read her stories about being an educated adult woman who suddenly discovers that she has to learn how to speak, meet people and read between the lines all over again.
We’ll laugh at language mishaps, recognise ourselves in someone else’s adventures and remember experiences of our own that once felt like disasters but now deserve an audience.
The evening will finish with a Q&A with Elena, offering a chance to talk about books, life abroad, creativity and turning personal experience into stories people want to read and hear.

Anyone who has recently moved to Britain, or has lived here for years and still finds it surprising. Anyone who enjoys good writing, personal stories and self-deprecating humour.
About the author
Elena Timokhina is a writer and journalist with eight books published by MIF, Clever, Makhaon and Phoenix-Premier, and more than 90,000 copies sold. Over the past eighteen months, she has given more than forty readings, literary performances and author talks. She writes columns for SETTERS and Mel and champions flash fiction, the art of the very short story.
