EKVTIME: MAN OF GOD: Georgian Independence Day Film Screening
Tuesday 26. May at 20:00 - 22:02
FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi
Nikoloz Khomasuridze | 2018 | Georgia | 2h12m | Presented in the original Georgian audio with English subtitles
EKVTIME: MAN OF GOD tells the story of Ekvtime Takaishvili, one of the great guardians of Georgian cultural memory, and a man whose life became inseparable from the survival of the nation’s treasures.
The film follows Ekvtime during one of the most fragile periods in Georgian history. After the Soviet occupation of Georgia in 1921, the treasures of the Democratic Republic of Georgia were taken into exile to protect them from seizure. Ekvtime became their keeper, spending years in poverty and uncertainty while refusing to sell, abandon, or compromise what had been entrusted to him.
This is a film about independence after the state has been lost. Khomasuridze focuses on preservation as an act of resistance: manuscripts, icons, jewellery, archives, and sacred objects become more than historical artefacts. They become proof that Georgia existed before occupation, and would continue to exist beyond it.
Presented as part of FOMO’s Georgian Independence Day program, EKVTIME: MAN OF GOD is included because it looks at patriotism without spectacle. It’s about duty, endurance, and the quiet labour of protecting a country’s memory when politics, war, and empire try to erase it. For a day built around Georgian identity and independence, Ekvtime’s story belongs at the centre.
