DIY MIDI Controller Workshop
Saturday 11. October at 11:00 - 18:00
MOMS (Mind Over Matter Studio), Barcelona
In this workshop Francisco Estivallet will teach you how to design and build your own MIDI controller that can be used with TouchDesigner or pretty much any audio/video tool.
The controller we’ll build uses an ESP32 microcontroller with usb and bluetooth, has 16 analog inputs(potentiometers), an XY joystick and motion sensing capabilities(ideal for camera control). You'll learn how to connect your controller to TouchDesigner and customize it further.
For artists, designers and anyone interested in interactive media and hardware.
No prior experience needed. We’ll provide a kit with all the necessary parts and tools, and you get to keep your one of a kind MIDI controller after the workshop!
Duration:
~5 hours of Workshop + Open End
Cost:
EUR 65 (includes all materials: case, microcontroller, potentiometers, joystick, etc.)
What to Bring:
Laptop with USB port(or adapter), TouchDesigner installed(free version is fine).
Snacks + Water
(optional) If you have a TD project with lots of parameters to tweak, that would be great to test your MIDI controller.
Location:
Location will be shared within 48hrs of the start of the event, it will be in the Poblenou neighborhood
Language
The workshop will be held in English (with Spanish option)
Participants
Limited to 15 people for a hands-on experience
Agenda:
Short Intro (30min)
Part 1: Choosing Parts & Design (45min)
Discussion on how to define what parts are needed for your controller, how to choose and source them.
Overview of the 3D CAD design process for the case, and how to prepare it for 3D printing (we might even do some printing during the workshop)
Part 2: Working with the ESP32 (45min)
We’ll go into the fundamentals of using an arduino based microcontroller, learn how to upload code to the ESP32, tweak it and debug it.
Break
Part 3: Assembly (120min)
Like assembling Ikea furniture we'll build our controller step by step, while learning about each component and how to connect them.
Part 4: Connect & Map in TouchDesigner (60min)
With the hardware ready, we’ll connect the MIDI controllers to TouchDesigner via USB or Bluetooth and learn how to map the controls and integrate into your TD project.
Part 5: Open End
Hang out, play with your new controller. If you're interested, we can look into more advanced setups: adding more sensors, custom firmware, and whatever else comes up.
