DESIGN YOUR KORHOGO BLANKET — Reweaving Tradition

Saturday 26. September at 10:00 - 13:30

MAISON SHIFT, Zürich

Design your own Korhogo blanket: inspired by traditional weaving, you create a pattern that will be handwoven by a cooperative in Côte d’Ivoire.

This West African weaving tradition is based on narrow cotton strips produced on wooden looms. By varying colours and rhythms within these strips and combining them when sewn together, an almost endless range of geometric patterns can emerge.

In this workshop, you learn about the creative possibilities and constraints of this technique and develop your own design accordingly. Colours and patterns are composed within the strips and brought together into a unique overall composition.

The result is more than a design: each blanket is realised by skilled weavers in Korhogo, becoming a personal textile that connects contemporary design with a living craft tradition.

POPLIN PROJECT is a socially engaged label based in Zurich that connects traditional textile crafts from West Africa with contemporary design. Working with local cooperatives, they create sustainable products that preserve cultural knowledge and support fair working conditions. The project understands fashion as an intercultural dialogue and as an alternative to fast paced mass production.
