Quentin Dupieux’s absurdist character study begins with a man who develops an all-consuming obsession with a fringed deerskin jacket, a fixation that gradually mutates into a darkly comic exploration of male ego, identity and artistic delusion. What starts as a minimalist premise becomes a sly commentary on performance itself, blurring the line between cinema as self-expression and cinema as pathology.
Dupieux, also known for films such as RUBBER and MANDIBLES, operates within a lineage of French surrealism that stretches from Buñuel to contemporary deadpan absurdism. DEERSKIN strips narrative to its bare essentials while remaining strangely propulsive, driven by Jean Dujardin’s unnervingly committed central performance. The film’s deliberate roughness and modest scale are integral to its independent ethos, privileging imagination and tonal control over spectacle.
