ZABRISKIE POINT: Desert Visions Film Week at FOMO Cinema Tbilisi
Wednesday 24. June at 19:00 - 20:50
FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi
June 23-28 FOMO presents Desert Visions, a journey through some of cinema's most unforgettable deserts. From Australian outback nightmares and American road movies to spaghetti westerns, Soviet science fiction, spiritual quests, and stories of people searching for meaning at the edge of civilisation. These are films about vast landscapes, strange encounters, reinvention, survival, and what happens when the familiar world falls away.
ZABRISKIE POINT
Michelangelo Antonioni | 1970 | USA | English | 1h50m
Made at the height of America's counterculture movement, the film follows two young strangers drifting away from the cities, institutions, and expectations that define their lives. One is caught up in student protests and political unrest. The other works for a property developer helping transform the American landscape into something increasingly commercial and controlled. Their paths eventually cross in the California desert.
What interests Antonioni isn't the plot so much as the space around it. The empty roads. The vast landscapes. The feeling that an entire generation is searching for a different way to live but isn't quite sure where to find it.
Watching it today feels less like revisiting a historical moment and more like stepping into a dream someone had about America. Beautiful, confused, idealistic, lonely, and quietly apocalyptic.
I've always thought the desert scenes are among the most extraordinary ever filmed. Antonioni turns Death Valley into something that feels simultaneously ancient and futuristic. A place where old rules stop applying and entirely new possibilities briefly appear on the horizon.
Whether you end up loving it or arguing with it afterwards, ZABRISKIE POINT is exactly the kind of film that belongs in a film program dedicated to Desert Visions.
