Light, Structure, and Personality: The Black & White Portrait in the City

Black and white photography is not a filter. It is a conscious decision about how we see light, perceive shapes, and capture the essence of a person. Tallinn, specifically the vibrant, industrial atmosphere of Telliskivi, provides the perfect urban backdrop for this exploration. With its mix of historic brickwork, modern street art, and unique light, it is a playground for monochromatic composition.

In this three-hour outdoor workshop, we explore the streets and hidden corners of Telliskivi. We will use the urban environment not just as a background, but as an active, graphic design element to bring depth and character to your portraits.

What we will do together over these three hours:

• Reading the Urban Landscape & Seeing Shapes
  We will sharpen your eye for monochromatic vision. You will learn how to intentionally use architectural lines, industrial textures, shadows, and urban elements to create contrast and position your subject clearly within the frame.
  

• The Human Connection & the „Safe Space“
  A powerful portrait is created through connection, not just technique. We will discuss how to create a calm, trusting atmosphere even in a public setting, where your subject feels secure. It is about authentic interaction, understanding the person, and capturing that honest, candid moment.
  

• Practice & Direct Feedback
  We go straight into action. You will photograph in available daylight, experiment with the textures of Telliskivi, and test your skills. I will accompany you, offer guidance, and we will analyze your images directly on your camera display, honestly, constructively, and to the point, so you can refine your skills on the spot.

What you will gain:

A deeper understanding of natural light and urban composition, with a focus on what really matters: the person, the structure, and the light.

• Your camera (any kind, a smartphone is also welcome!)

• And, of course, a good mood and a desire to learn!
