The Lighthouse: Pour Decisions Week at FOMO

From cult comedies and chaotic bachelor parties to psychological breakdowns and unforgettable hangovers, this week's films prove that alcohol never solves anything… except giving us incredible movies.

Few modern films descend into madness as completely as THE LIGHTHOUSE.

From visionary director Robert Eggers, this extraordinary psychological drama stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as two lighthouse keepers assigned to a remote island off the New England coast in the 1890s. What begins as a routine four-week posting slowly unravels into a fever dream of relentless storms, isolation, heavy drinking, superstition, and psychological collapse. As alcohol consumption increases and reality begins to blur, the two men descend into one of cinema's most unforgettable battles of wills.

Shot on haunting black-and-white 35mm film in the nearly square 1.19:1 aspect ratio, THE LIGHTHOUSE feels like a forgotten artefact unearthed from another era. Eggers drew extensively from nineteenth-century maritime journals, sailors' folklore, and the unfinished final work of Edgar Allan Poe, creating a world that feels both historically authentic and deeply mythological.

The film is anchored by two astonishing performances. Willem Dafoe's weather-beaten sea captain delivers one of the most memorable monologues of the century, while Robert Pattinson matches him scene for scene in a performance that confirmed his transformation into one of the most adventurous actors of his generation. Their drunken arguments, bizarre rituals, and increasingly surreal power struggle have already become modern cinematic legend.

On a personal note, THE LIGHTHOUSE contains my favourite depiction of drunkenness ever put on film. There's one extended sequence that manages to be hilarious, unsettling, absurd, and uncannily realistic all at once. If you've never seen the film before, that scene alone is worth the price of admission, and it's even better experienced with a room full of people.

If you enjoy the psychological intensity of There Will Be Blood, the surreal nightmares of David Lynch, or the atmospheric folk horror of The Witch, THE LIGHTHOUSE is essential viewing. Funny, unsettling, visually breathtaking, and endlessly open to interpretation, it rewards repeat viewings and practically demands to be experienced with an audience.
