TASTE OF CHERRY Film Screening (Eng Subs)

Wednesday 4. February at 21:00 - 22:35

FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

Abbas Kiarostami | 1997 | Iran | 1h35m | Persian language with English subtitles

TASTE OF CHERRY marked a turning point in how world audiences understood Iranian cinema. Winner of the Palme d’Or, Kiarostami’s film is built from conversation, landscape, and hesitation. Its simplicity hides a philosophical weight that lingers long after the final image.

The story follows a man driving the outskirts of Tehran searching for someone willing to perform a single task after his planned suicide. Each passenger responds differently, turning the journey into a series of moral encounters. The car becomes a moving confessional. Dusty hills and construction sites form a portrait of a city suspended between growth and emptiness. Kiarostami refuses melodrama. He invites the viewer into an open space where meaning must be negotiated, not delivered.

Its victory at Cannes provoked debate in Iran, where officials were wary of the film’s subject matter and ambiguous ending. International critics hailed it as proof that minimalist cinema could achieve global impact without spectacle. Kiarostami’s blend of documentary texture and fiction reshaped festival filmmaking in the late 90s, influencing directors across Asia and Europe. The film’s final moments remain one of the most discussed endings in modern cinema, a gesture that transforms the entire experience retroactively.
