How to View the Avant-Garde: A Tour at the Musée d’Art Moderne

Saturday 13. December at 15:00 - 16:30

Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris

If some doors close for renovation — in our case, the Centre Pompidou — it’s the perfect moment to step through others, namely the Museum of Modern Art of Paris. Its permanent collection is an ideal space for immersing yourself in the artistic processes of modernism. We will explore the art of the first half of the 20th century, with names such as Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Derain, Dufy, Picasso, Braque, Léger, Soutine, Picabia, and many others.

This is art that isn’t always easy to decipher, art that requires you to “adjust your eye” in a special way. But it is also art that rarely leaves anyone indifferent. We will talk extensively about different avant-garde movements and their representatives, about the School of Paris, and we will of course discuss the building itself, a striking Art Deco landmark. The highlights of the visit will be two monumental works: The Dance by Henri Matisse and The Electricity Fairy by Raoul Dufy.

You can expect not just a guided tour of the collection, but more importantly, a lecture-style visit that will offer a holistic understanding of the avant-garde as a cultural phenomenon, its origins, and its development.

When: December 13, 15:00 AM
Where: Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris
The lecture will be in Russian.
