EXPERIMENTS IN 🇬🇪 CINEMA: An Evening with Filmmaker Tornike Bziava

Sunday 15. March at 20:00 - 23:00

FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

Actor, director, and provocateur Tornike Bziava will join us at FOMO Secret Cinema this Sunday to present six of his award winning Georgian short films made over the past 23 years.

Last week we screened Tornike’s A SECRET MAN, followed by a discussion after John Cassavetes’ A CHILD IS BORN. This Sunday Tornike returns to talk about his more recent experimental work and the realities of making films between France and Georgia. The conversation will also touch on his experiences acting alongside international stars such as Chris Hemsworth.

The program will run for about three hours with a short intermission after the first two films. Guests are welcome to come and go during the evening.

A rare chance to see a wide selection of Tornike Bziava’s work on the big screen and hear directly from the filmmaker. A special night for anyone interested in Georgian cinema, independent filmmaking, and experimental film.

NOTE: FOMO will retain 14 GEL from the sale of each ticket, with the remainder going to Tornike to help finance his next film project.

FILM PROGRAM

FISHING (2017) 18m The Christmas Holidays are just finished and people in town start to do fishing.

WAKE MAN (2015) 29m Rezo is a 70 year-old resident of the old people's house. He is tired of the lack of proper food at the institution, so he keeps notes from the local obituaries. He attends wakes of unknown individuals and stays for the dinner, which is the traditional feast that takes place after the funeral. At one such feast Rezo meets his former student, whom he taught Georgian dance in the 90's.

NEST aka LE NID (2011) 20m An 80-year-old lonely man feels sorry for the loss of his wife and the divorce of his son. One day, his old maid makes a hopeful dream. For her, that is for sure, the situation will be getting better soon.

APRIL CHILL aka APRILIS SUSKHI (2010) 15m The story of a Soviet military serviceman and a male Georgian dancer. An anti-violence film about the awakening of human instinct in an invader.

DELIRIUM (2003) 1h5m The absurdity of war, where people lose the ability to communicate and moral values. The story of a woman and man who have lost the sense of reality, in Ionesco's absurd genre. Despite the constant conflict, they can no longer stay calm together. The war is over but they stay in a separate, isolated world - where is no fear but the silence.

LISTEN TO CHOPIN (2002) 44m During the period when the Georgian cinema lost its skills to express the cinematographic images and turned into a junk, Tornike Bziava recovered the old cinema images, simultaneously painting a picture of a contemporary life...but with humor and self-irony and not with a boring admonition. This is an alternative cinema, which has to pour the young blood into our beloved Georgian cinematography.
