TRAIN DREAMS is a restrained, lyrical adaptation of Denis Johnson’s celebrated novella, tracing the life of a solitary railroad worker in early 20th century America.
Set against vast landscapes and brutal working conditions, the film follows a man whose existence unfolds largely in isolation. Days are shaped by labor, long distances, and fleeting human contact. Time moves quietly, with years slipping past almost unnoticed. Bentley builds a meditative rhythm, allowing small gestures and physical detail to carry emotional weight.
Rather than traditional narrative momentum, the film relies on accumulation. Moments of tenderness, loss, and wonder emerge organically from everyday experience. The natural world, harsh and beautiful, becomes both companion and adversary.
TRAIN DREAMS belongs to a lineage of American frontier narratives concerned with solitude, displacement, and endurance. It reflects on how lives pass without recognition, and how memory becomes the final record of existence. The result is a film of unusual stillness, patience, and emotional clarity.
