COOL RUNNINGS is one of those rare 90s comedies that’s every bit as funny as you remember. The jokes still land, the pacing is sharp, and more than thirty years later, it’s almost impossible not to get swept up in it.
Loosely inspired by the Jamaican bobsled team that competed at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, it’s an almost ridiculously optimistic film about refusing to accept that something is impossible. When one route to the Olympics closes, these four men find another. It requires imagination, determination, a fairly improbable new sport and, most importantly, the right people beside them.
That’s where COOL RUNNINGS fits so naturally into our family season. Sometimes the people who become family aren’t the ones you grew up with. They’re the people you meet along the way who believe in you, push you, pick you up when things go wrong and help you become more than you could have managed on your own. Some of those families might only exist for a particular chapter of your life, but you can carry those friendships with you forever.
And then there’s John Candy. He’s wonderful here as Irv Blitzer, the disgraced former champion who reluctantly agrees to coach the team and discovers that he needs them almost as much as they need him.
This September, we want the rooftop to be somewhere you can come and watch films that leave you feeling better than when you arrived. COOL RUNNINGS does exactly that. It’s funny, generous, completely sincere about friendship and chasing impossible dreams, and still one of the great feel-good crowd movies of the 1990s.

ABOUT FOMO OPEN-AIR CINEMA
We opened FOMO Open-Air Cinema in the summer of 2025 with one simple idea: to create the kind of summer cinema we'd always hoped to find in Tbilisi. As Australian film lovers, some of our favourite memories were evenings spent watching films outdoors after sunset, with a cold drink in hand and a great film on the big screen. We wanted to bring that experience here.
Whether you're joining us with friends, on a date, or flying solo, we hope FOMO becomes part of your summer.

FOOD & DRINK POLICY
Guests are welcome to bring food and drinks purchased inside Bazari Orbeliani to enjoy during the screening. Outside drinks are not permitted. FOMO's SHEREKILEBI Bar will be open on the terrace ofdering a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
LOCATION
Bazari Orbeliani Rooftop Terrace, a five-minute walk from Liberty Square Metro Station, on the corner of Atoneli St and Sulkanishvili St.
HOW TO FIND FOMO OPEN-AIR CINEMA
Enter Bazari Orbeliani from Atoneli Street via the entrance above Carrefour. Take the stairs on the left when you walk and follow the signs to the rooftop. The stairs on the right that also go to to the rooftop but will be locked so as not disturb the screening.
OPEN-AIR CINEMA REFUND POLICY
As this is an outdoor event, screenings may occasionally be affected by weather. In the event of rain we will move the screening downstairs to the indoor FOMO Secret Cinema. Refunds are only issued in the event we cancel the screening altogether.
WHAT TO WEAR
Tbilisi weather likes to keep us on our toes. Even after a hot day, it can cool down quickly once the sun sets and the rooftop breeze can be surprisingly fresh. We recommend dressing warm and bringing a jacket or jumper just in case.
