Although Slovenia has just 46.6 kilometres of coastline, it is filled with historic towns, Mediterranean architecture and beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea. During this trip, we will explore four of its best-known coastal destinations: Koper, Izola, Piran and Portorož. Each town has its own character, from Venetian palaces and former fishing harbours to romantic streets and lively seaside promenades.
KOPER
Our first stop will be Koper, Slovenia’s largest coastal city and its main gateway to the Adriatic Sea.
We will explore its historic centre, where narrow streets lead to Tito Square and the impressive Praetorian Palace. Built in the 13th century and redesigned in the 15th century, the palace is one of Koper’s most important architectural landmarks. Nearby stands the 54-metre-high Bell Tower, which houses Slovenia’s oldest bell, cast in Venice in 1333. Together with the city’s Venetian-influenced architecture and busy harbour, these landmarks reveal Koper’s long connection with both the Mediterranean and the sea.
IZOLA
We will then continue to Izola, a former fishing town known for its colourful harbour, narrow streets and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere.
Izola was originally an island before it gradually became connected to the mainland, which explains the distinctive peninsula shape it retains today. Its history is closely connected with fishing and the fish-processing industry, traces of which can still be seen throughout the town. Take a walk through the old centre, explore the waterfront or simply enjoy the view of fishing boats and yachts resting in the harbour. Izola’s slower pace and authentic coastal character make it a refreshing contrast to the larger towns nearby.
PIRAN
Our next destination will be Piran, one of the most picturesque historic towns on the Adriatic coast.
Its maze of narrow streets, closely packed houses and Venetian-inspired architecture leads towards Tartini Square, named after the famous violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini. Above the town stands the Church of St George, offering magnificent views across Piran and the sea. Piran’s development is also closely linked to the region’s salt pans and a salt-making tradition stretching back more than 700 years. The wealth created by salt helped shape the town into the remarkable historic destination we see today.
PORTOROŽ
Our final stop will be Portorož, Slovenia’s best-known seaside resort, recognised for its beaches, palm-lined promenade, hotels, cafés and lively atmosphere.
The town has a long tradition of seaside tourism and wellness, with many treatments inspired by salt, brine and mud from the nearby Sečovlje Salt Pans. You will have free time to walk along the promenade, relax beside the sea or explore the town at your own pace. Those looking for a sweet ending to the day can visit Cacao Café, which offers a wide selection of ice creams, desserts and drinks. Its spacious terrace overlooking the sea provides the perfect place to relax before our return to Ljubljana.
