In 1971, hundreds of young people occupied the abandoned military barracks on Bådsmandsstræde in the heart of Copenhagen. In an instant, Christiania was born: a radical experiment in freedom and community that became a genuine alternative to mainstream society.

Christiania is one of the world’s wildest social experiments. After more than 50 years of big dreams, strong tobacco and anarchic ideals, the colourful neighbourhood finally gets the film its turbulent history deserves. Christiania is an honest, offbeat and humorous documentary that, through vivid and extraordinary archival material, traces the story from its origins to the present day, painting a portrait of a microcosm in constant transformation.
