Description
Before the concert, at 15.00, a lecture “What is the sound of one hand clapping? Music in Japanese culture”, will be held by Alari Allik. Participation in the lecture is free of charge for concert ticket holders. The lecture will be held in Estonian.

Vambola Krigul, a percussionist active as a soloist, chamber and orchestra musician, has chosen four composers of contemporary music for his concert. The contributions of these authors are difficult to overestimate and each of them poses a serious and intriguing challenge for a percussion soloist.

John Cage allows the musician to operate at the border between freedom and rigour and play on non-traditional instruments such as the cactus. Tōru Takemitsu’s work is characterised by bold improvisation, Toshio Hosokawa ventures into dynamic extremes and Kaija Saariaho confronts the soloist with complex polyrhythm.

Like the player, the audience will also need to attune themselves, as the concert will offer some extraordinary sounds.

The connecting thread running through the entire programme is the inspiration that all the composers have drawn from the Orient, especially Japan.
