Marcel Camus's Black Orpheus (1959) is a reinterpretation of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus. The film is based on Vinicius de Moraes's play Orfeu da Conceição (also known in adaptation as Orfeo do Carnaval). It is especially renowned for its emotionally rich soundtrack, which plays a central role in driving the story forward.
Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, Black Orpheus has secured its place in cinema history.
