Puutarhapiha, Lapinlahden Lähde, Helsinki
In Thorshavn, an entire family of theatre people are preparing to stage Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’. But this time, everything is different. Everyone is gathered in a circle around Birita Mohr. The beloved actress and mother is now suffering from severe Alzheimer’s. Everyone is preparing for what will probably be her last role – with her son Búi Dam as director.
Búi Dam is also behind the film, which depicts the difficult process in a present and loving way. And he has succeeded in creating a film that is both deeply moving and completely unsentimental. But the project is not without its own dramatic turning points. Dam is asked to justify the ethical responsibility of allowing his mother to perform, while his father tries to balance his new role as her husband and carer. Meanwhile, the premiere date is fast approaching. ‘Birita’ is a film that goes straight to the heart and stays there.
