What do you do when the supposedly rational world around you has gone mad? In BIRDS, ORPHANS AND FOOLS, three young people decide the only rational response is to behave like fools.
Made in the aftermath of the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, Juraj Jakubisko’s film follows three friends who have already been marked by political violence. They respond by retreating into a private world of games, costumes, animals, music and deliberate absurdity, as a way of shielding themselves from the tumult and unrest in the outside world.
For a while, the film feels almost joyful. Jakubisko fills the frame with movement, visual jokes and playful performance. But jealousy, fear and violence gradually enter the relationships, and the freedom the characters have created begins to collapse from within.
The film was later suppressed by the Communist authorities and remained largely unseen for years. At just 78 minutes, it's one of the easiest ways into the more anarchic side of the Czechoslovak New Wave, and a great example of how political cinema can be playful without becoming lightweight.
FOOD AND DRINK POLICY: SHEREKILEBI Bar in FOMO Secret Cinema opens 1 hour before the first screening of the day and closes at 01:30, serving a wide selection of beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic refreshments including coffee and tea, as well as fresh hot popcorn! Outside food is allowed in the bar but not in the cinema. No alcohol or drinks from outside are allowed. All guests are invited to arrive early and stay late!
