BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE

Stephen Herek, 1989, USA, 1h30m, English with English subtitles

Long before he became cinema's ultimate action hero, Keanu Reeves won audiences over as Ted "Theodore" Logan, one half of perhaps the most lovable duo in comedy history. BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE is the film that introduced Reeves to a global audience, and nearly four decades later its optimism, inventiveness and irresistible charm remain completely intact.

When two well-meaning but spectacularly underachieving Californian teenagers are told they'll fail their history class, they receive unexpected help from Rufus, a mysterious traveller from the future. Armed with a time machine disguised as a phone booth, Bill and Ted set off through history, meeting everyone from Napoleon and Joan of Arc to Socrates, Billy the Kid and Beethoven in a desperate attempt to pass their exam and, unknowingly, save the future itself.

Directed by Stephen Herek, who would later go on to make favourites including The Mighty Ducks and 101 Dalmatians, the film succeeds because it never mocks its heroes. Bill and Ted may not be academic high-flyers, but they're endlessly curious, relentlessly kind and genuinely excited by the world around them. Their infectious enthusiasm gives the film a warmth that's rare in studio comedies of any era.

Reeves' performance as Ted established many of the qualities that would define his screen persona: sincerity, generosity and an ability to make even the most outlandish situations feel emotionally grounded. Together with Alex Winter's Bill, the pair created one of the great comic partnerships of the 1980s, proving that kindness and optimism could be just as memorable as cynicism.

Funny, endlessly quotable and powered by one of the simplest high-concept premises ever put on screen, BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE remains a joyful celebration of friendship, curiosity and the idea that history belongs to everyone. Be excellent to each other.
