Rang Saun · Läänekaare 1, Nõmme, Harju maakond, Estonia
Britain has never had a revolution. But on 5 November 1605, there was a failed attempt at one known as the Gunpowder Plot involving a man named Guy Fawkes. The anniversary of this date has since been marked across Britain as Guy Fawkes Night. It started as a state holiday (with anti-catholic overtones) to celebrate crushing the revolution but quickly became subverted as a way to mock the establishment and is still celebrated mostly ironically today, often with an 'honoury Guy' burnt instead.
Adam Rang has hosted the celebration at his smoke sauna in Tallinn for the past few years and is now inviting members of the British-Estonian Chamber of Commerce to join him. Children are welcome. Adam, who is himself from a Catholic British family, will discuss the history of Guy Fawkes and how it has evolved over the years (and why it shouldn't be taken too seriously today). There will be a firepit, fireworks, saunas - including Tallinn's only smoke sauna and a smoke sauna inside a ZiL-131 Soviet Army truck - and an outdoor cinema screening of V for Vendetta. Before the day, we will vote in this group from a shortlist to decide what will be our honoury Guy burnt at the event. To avoid alarming the neighbours (or ending up in the Estonian newspapers), we will not be burning an effigy of a person but instead a (politically neutral!) thing or concept.
What to bring:
Just your own drinks and food and a towel if you want to use the saunas.
As warm as you can! (And swimsuit optional inside the saunas).
Free entry for Children.
6pm - 7pm: Celebration begins
7pm: V for Vendetta screening starts & saunas are ready
9pm: Historical discussion, followed by the burning of the effigy and fireworks.
