BAGDAD CAFE: Desert Visions Film Week at FOMO Cinema Tbilisi

Wednesday 24. June at 21:15 - 22:50

FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

June 23-28 FOMO presents Desert Visions, a journey through some of cinema's most unforgettable deserts. From Australian outback nightmares and American road movies to spaghetti westerns, Soviet science fiction, spiritual quests, and stories of people searching for meaning at the edge of civilisation. These are films about vast landscapes, strange encounters, reinvention, survival, and what happens when the familiar world falls away.

People have been asking I screen this for quite some time now, and after seeing it for yourself I'm sure you'll understand why. BAGDAD CAFE is one of the warmest and most generous films you'll ever see at FOMO.

A German tourist finds herself stranded at a run-down roadside café in the Mojave Desert after an argument with her husband. She has no obvious reason to stay and yet, little by little, she becomes part of the strange community that has formed around this isolated outpost in the middle of nowhere.

What's remarkable about the film is how little conflict it needs. Most stories set in the desert are about survival, danger, or people losing themselves. BAGDAD CAFE is about the opposite. It's about friendship, kindness, reinvention, and the unexpected connections that can emerge when people are removed from their ordinary lives.

The desert here isn't hostile. It's liberating. A place where old identities can be discarded and new ones quietly emerge.

I've always loved films that build entire worlds out of seemingly insignificant places. A diner. A motel. A café beside an empty road. BAGDAD CAFE takes one of the most unpromising locations imaginable and turns it into somewhere you never want to leave.

It's funny, eccentric, deeply humane, and one of those rare films that leaves you feeling better about people by the time it's over.
