Discussion and Jazz Series “Ruumiklubi”
Wed 07.10 20:00 - 22:00
In collaboration with: Philly Joe’s, Maa- ja Ruumiamet
Vabaduse väljak 10, Tallinn (Philly Joe's Jazz bar)
On 7 October, the first evening of the Tallinn Architecture Biennale’s discussion and jazz series, Estonia’s State Architect Tõnis Arjus will talk with musician Reigo Ahven about how space influences and shapes us. Music will be performed by Aleksander Paal Duo.
Aleksander Paal is an Estonian jazz saxophonist whose playing combines powerful energy, virtuosity and improvisational freedom. His distinctive sound and versatile musical background have made him a valued presence on Estonia’s jazz stages and an exciting collaborator across a wide range of ensembles.
Jaan Jaanson is an Estonian jazz guitarist known for his refined sound, sensitive improvisation and strong sense of musical interplay. Over the years, he has collaborated with many acclaimed Estonian musicians and established a distinctive voice in Estonia’s jazz and improvised music scene.
Together, Aleksander Paal and Jaan Jaanson create architecture in sound. The guitar lays the foundations and supporting structures, while the saxophone opens up arches, stairways and unexpected views. There is no finished blueprint — the form takes shape on stage through a dialogue between the two musicians. Each improvisation creates a new space for the listener to enter.
Ruumiklubi explores the meanings of space and its influence on our lives. It is a meeting place for personal stories and music — bringing together people’s personal and professional experiences of how our surroundings affect and shape us.
The conversations welcome guests from a wide range of backgrounds — writers, lawyers, sociologists, musicians, entrepreneurs, architects and even heads of state. Many are known to the public primarily through the media, but Ruumiklubi offers an opportunity to discover their ideas and experiences from a fresh perspective. Each conversation reveals how space touches us all — whether it is our home, public urban space, a natural landscape or our workplace.
Music is woven into every Ruumiklubi conversation. Each evening features a jazz artist with a distinctive musical voice, adding a poetic and improvisational dimension to the discussion. Music fills the space.
The evening is hosted by Estonia’s State Architect, Tõnis Arjus. The conversations will also be available afterwards on the Ruumilood podcast.
Come to listen, reflect and feel — Ruumiklubi welcomes everyone curious about the spaces around us and within us!
The event will be held in Estonian.
