ARm #2 “History of the Tide” by Arjen Mulder

Based on current scientific knowledge I will explore the astronomical and geological processes of how the tide came about some 4.5 billion years ago, and the colorful transformations of the ocean that have happened since then. The history of the tide is also the history of how life came about some 4.2 billion years ago and how it affected the ocean, the atmosphere and life itself. I’ll follow the story till the seaweeds left the ocean and moved from the tidal zone onto land, and everything changed except for the tide itself.

History of the Tide is the introductional lecture of the Academy of Rhythmorphology.

Arjen Mulder is a writer and speculative biologist based in Amsterdam, Holland. He published some 15 books, most recently The World According to Plants. You can find translations of his work in English on academia.edu.
