Ensemble U: was founded in 2002 by Taavi Kerikmäe and Tarmo Johannes and consists of six outstanding musicians: Helena Tuuling – clarinet, Merje Roomere – violin, Levi-Danel Mägila – cello, Taavi Kerikmäe – piano, Tarmo Johannes – flute, Vambola Krigul – percussion.
U: is currently the most active and best-known contemporary music ensemble in Estonia. The ensemble is characterized by a sensitive sonic palette, openness to bold experimental ideas, and the ability to perform even the most demanding works without a conductor. The group is known for its refined sound, its openness to daring experimental concepts, and its conductorless performances of highly challenging repertoire.
U: has performed in Estonia as well as at major international festivals abroad, being so far the only Estonian ensemble to have performed at the Venice Music Biennale. U: works with both classics of contemporary music and experimental compositions. One of the ensemble’s important directions is the exploration of improvisation and the performance of works that require the interpretation of non-traditional notation.
