*Park Chan-wook | 2025 | South Korea | 139 minutes
Presented in the original Korean audio with English subtitles.
NO OTHER CHOICE is screening at FOMO Secret Cinema as part of our weekly program of new films by major contemporary directors.
NO OTHER CHOICE follows Yoo Man-su, a middle aged paper industry expert who loses his stable job after a corporate buyout. At first he tries to do everything “right”. He updates his CV. He goes to interviews. He tells his family it will only take a few months to find something new. A year later he is working a low paid retail job, the money is gone, the house feels smaller, and his family are living with the fallout of his broken promise.
Scenes with his family complicate the simple idea of a “killer” and keep the story grounded in day to day reality. Park mixes sharp visual gags, sudden bursts of violence, and quiet domestic moments to build a picture of a man crushed by a ruthless job market who decides that there is, as the title says, no other choice.
NO OTHER CHOICE is essential if you are interested in Park Chan-wook’s work beyond OLDBOY and THE HANDMAIDEN. It is a brutal but often very funny satire on modern capitalism and wounded masculinity, and one of the most talked about Korean films of the year.
