Pleasure & Influence: How porn shapes desire and connection

Torsdag 12. juni klokken 19:00 - 21:00

Mashti Community, Oslo

Open for all genders

In this new event series, Creating Shame-Free Pleasure, we focus on our relationship to porn.

At this event, we are aiming to open up a space to share and discuss our use of and feelings around p0rn, and how this impacts our relationships and how we feel about ourselves. It will be a group discussion rather than a panel, where people can come to share their experiences with p0rn freely, honestly, and without shame, and where no judgements will be passed.

Some numbers claim that around 80% of men have accessed p0rnography at some point, and for many boys, p0rn is their first source of information about intimacy and s3x.
For women, the numbers are lower – some say 60% of women use p0rn. Yet, the use of p0rn is surrounded by much shame: anti-p0rn feminists have portrayed men who consume p0rn as partaking in the oppression of and violence against women, and the conservative right has opposed p0rn on the grounds that it encourages non-procreative s3x and thus threatens the family as a basic social unit.
Meanwhile, most p0rn cater to men and portray s3x from the point of view of the male gaze, potentially alienating women. This means that many have a complicated relationship to p0rn, in which feelings of pleasure and guilt – among other things – intermingle.

Bring your guilt, your worries, and your pleasures, and let’s air them out together.

She also has a Master’s degree in Gender Studies from SOAS, and has worked with gender issues in the socialist left in Norway as well as while running a farm and a school for many years in Pakistan. Although originating in Norway, she has spent half her life in other countries, resulting in a transnational life and identity. She is dedicated to creating a gender equal society, and believes that it is important to work with men, and to understand their lives and experiences, to achieve this.
