The Winter Solstice is a roaming nocturnal art project and cross-disciplinary happening materializing in Oslo and its outskirts during the longest night of the year, initiated in 2012. This is an idealistic event, organized with very small means with the high ambition to offer a unique experience to the audience and participating artists.

At each occurrence, the Winter Solstice gathers the local audience around various practices of both emerging and established artists, offering a unique opportunity to experience visual arts through the night combined with performances, concerts, poetry readings, plays and many art forms in between, with a high coefficient of experimental arts.

The food and entrance are free.

Since 2012, the Winter Solstice has gathered over 130 artists, attracting 200 to 300 people every year. The event's sole meaning is contained in the word project: throwing something into the future.

This event is inspired by the Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York, initiated in 1963 by the cellist and performance artist Charlotte Moorman, as well as pre-christian pagan traditions such as Yule and Modranicht, the very origins of christmas.

The Winter Solstice 2024 is made with the kind support of Nitja, NyMusikk, Notam and the Norwegian Art Council.
